How to Get Hired

If you’re trying to get a new job but you’ve either been out of the workplace for a while, maybe because you’ve been raising your children or maybe you just need a career change, it can be difficult to know where to start. Things are constantly changing in the world of work and recruitment and now that there are so many different pieces of technology and recruitment websites it’s a minefield out there!

So, what’s the best way to get hired?

The best way to get hired is to show off your skills and abilities to do the job. You can do this in the traditional way, by making sure your CV/resume is up to scratch, but you also need to get yourself out there. Let employers find you. This is even more important if you want to work in an industry where it is important to be proactive such as sales or marketing.

Here are some ways you can get yourself noticed by the right people:

Get on LinkedIn

This is like an online CV where you can put down all your career history, get recommendations from former colleagues and list your skills. It also gives you the chance to show off any achievements such as presentations you’ve done, videos you’ve made or portfolios of your art. Get on there if you want to show people what you’re capable of. You can even do a video telling people who you are and why they should hire you!

Get on the jobs boards

Put your CV/Resume on the job boards. In the UK I recommend Indeed, Reed, Monster and Total Jobs. If you get your keywords right you will attract attention from agencies and employers and it’s better for them to come to you than for you to go to them – it already gives you the upper hand.

You can use LinkedIn for this but don’t forget friends and family. Employers would rather hire someone that’s recommended to them than spend money on advertising and training only to find they’ve hired the wrong person.

Be Yourself

When you go to the interview, be yourself. I say this so many times but people freeze up and either let interview nerves get the better of them or they get a feel for the employer and try to be someone they think the employer will like rather than be their real selves. The problem with this is that, once they get into the organisation, they find they don’t fit in and they end up looking for a new job within a few months. The most important thing an employer is looking for is whether or not you will fit in with their existing team, so do yourself and your potential employer a favour and show your true personality.

These are just some of the ways you can get hired. I will be posting other tips on this website as it grows and as things change but I hope that these help and I would love to hear from you if you got hired because of something you read in this post.
